The IVC is very much concerned with the development and training of vocal talent and is therefore organising master classes in various specific areas of vocal art. The first IVC Summer School takes place from 5 – 10 September 2011 and will be devoted to bel canto technique: this forms the basis for correct and healthy use of the voice and is obligatory for the development of a flexible and expressive singing style.
The IVC is delighted to announce that two pre-eminent international singers will be this year’s masters: soprano Nelly Miricioiu and tenor William Matteuzzi. Nelly Miricioiu won the IVC’s Prize of the City of ’s-Hertogenbosch (first prize) in 1979. Conductor David Parry, who is very specialized in operas from the bel canto period in the 19th century, will also come to ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The three masters will be assisted by leading bel canto pianist and coach Luca Gorla.
The IVC now makes it possible for young singers at the highest level to benefit from a week of intensive work with experts in the field.
The evening sessions and closing concert on 10 September are open to the public.

Laureates of the 48th International Vocal Competition ‘s-Hertogenbosch 2010 give a series of concerts in the Netherlands.

Voi-Z Festival Zwolle
From 1 – 10 April the Voi-Z Opera and Musical Theatre Festival is held at various locations in Zwolle. These ten days are packed with dozens of performances for lovers of vocal music. The Combattimento Consort Amsterdam will kick-of the Voi-Z Festival with performances of Handel’s Orlando.

Mezzo-soprano Rosanne van Sandwijk

One of the big winners of the 48th IVC 2010 will sing at the Voi-Z Festival on Sunday, 3 April: mezzo-soprano Rosanne van Sandwijk. Rosanne was the only Dutch contestant to reach the IVC finals and winner of four awards, including the Toonkunst Oratorio Prize and the Staetshuys Fonds Prize for talented young Dutch singers. South Korean tenor Seil Kim was the winner of the engagement prize from the ‘Vrienden van het Lied’. Both also won a Lied Course by world famous soprano Elly Ameling. On April 3 they are accompanied on piano by Maarten Hillenius.

Dutch Student Chamber Orchestra Tour
Every year the Dutch Student Chamber Orchestra (NESKO) is re-composed of students from Dutch universities and colleges. In this way, the orchestra offers advanced amateurs the opportunity to work under the guidance of a renowned conductor. Each year a young soloist is invited to accompany the orchestra on their tour. This year, mezzo-soprano Rosanne van Sandwijk goes on tour with the NESKO. Rosanne will sing songs from Gustav Mahler’s Rückert Lieder and from Des Knaben Wunderhorn.

Lisztomania The Hague
In 2011, the 200th anniversary of Franz Liszt’s birthday is celebrated. The Lisztomania weekend on 23 and 24 April in The Hague, brings to life in concerts and presentations the exciting atmosphere that surrounded Liszt in his heyday. Liszt loved the human voice. Although he never wrote operas, he did compose about 70 songs. For a chamber music concert on Sunday, April 24 Rosanne van Sandwijk has chosen six beautiful songs from this collection. Three songs are on a text by Petrarch and breathe the spirit of Italian opera. Three others are written by Victor Hugo, who had come to know Liszt very well during his years in Paris.
Rosanne is accompanied by pianist Nino Gvetadze, second prize-winner at the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition 2008.

‘Klassiek in ‘t Veen’ Valthermond
German soprano Daniela Köhler won first prize at the 48th IVC, the Prize of the City ‘s-Hertogenbosch. On Saturday, May 21 she gives a recital of songs and opera arias at “Onder de Linden” in Valthermond.

Irish baritone Benjamin Russell (semi-final 48th IVC and winner Elly Ameling Song Course) will also sing at the concert on May 21. Russell’s participation in the IVC earned him many noteworthy offers, e.g. from the Dame Kiri Te Kanawa Foundation and the Juilliard School in New York. Piano accompaniment is provided by Mairead Hurley, also from Ireland. This concert is part of the series “Klassiek in ‘t Veen”.

Operadagen Rotterdam
The sixth ‘Operadagen Rotterdam’ festival is held from 20 – 29 May. World-renowned soloists are featured alongside young talent throughout venues in the city, from theatres and concert halls to offices, public places and living-rooms. On Sunday, May 29 soprano Jeanine de Bique from Trinidad and Tobago (Arleen Auger Prize winner) will sing with South Korean tenor Seil Kim (winner of the Prize ‘Vrienden van het Lied´) at a brunch concert in the Rotterdamse Schouwburg (municipal theatre). IVC Memorial Concert 4 May 2011

The IVC Memorial Concert at the Provincial Administration Building in ‘s-Hertogenbosch has become an annual tradition. This year, in collaboration with the Philharmonic Orchestra ‘s-Hertogenbosch, a unique and large-scale event is organized: the performance of The Armed Man, A Mass for Peace by the Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. 250 performers, professional and amateur musicians, young and old, get the chance to make music together at a high level. The title The Armed Mann is based on a 15th-century folk song on which soldiers marched: l’Homme armé. The composition stems from 1999 and is dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo war. Like Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem, The Armed Man is an antiwar piece. Heroic acts of war and violence are followed by texts about the grievous consequences of that violence. The Mass ends with the affirmation from Revelations that change is possible, that sorrow, pain and death can be overcome. Dona nobis pacem.
